Deep Rest Is Not a Luxury: An Introduction to Yoga Nidra

Updated: Jan 29

Sat Nam, and Welcome in,

Most of us are tired in a very specific way.

Not “I need a nap” tired. More like, tired-but-wired. Overstimulated. Unable to fully shut down, even when we finally stop moving.

And for many people, meditation doesn’t help — not because they’re doing it wrong, but because sitting upright with an active mind can feel like just one more thing to manage.

That’s where Yoga Nidra comes in.

Yoga Nidra is a guided practice of deep rest. You lie down, get comfortable with blankets and support, close your eyes, and are guided through a structured relaxation designed to downshift the nervous system.

There is no movement. There is nothing to perform. There is nothing to “get right.”

This is not sleep hypnosis, and it’s not a test of focus. You don’t need experience, flexibility, or a quiet mind. You don’t even need to feel calm when you arrive.

You just lie down. I guide you. Your nervous system does the rest.

Many people are surprised by how restorative this kind of rest can be. The body is allowed to settle without effort, and the mind is gently occupied in a way that makes letting go easier. People often leave feeling clearer, steadier, and more rested than they’ve felt in a long time.

Yoga Nidra is especially helpful if:

• you feel exhausted but can’t fully relax

• meditation feels frustrating or effortful

• your nervous system feels “on” all the time

• you want rest without having to earn it

This is not a yoga class in the usual sense. It’s closer to guided decompression — a chance to step out of doing mode and let your system reset.

On Thursday nights at Kundalini Yoga in Detroit, I offer Yoga Nidra as Deep Rest. The room is quiet. You lie down—comfortably and not on the floor. We use beds or cots to fully support deep rest. You will be warm and supported. And for about an hour, you don’t have to try to do anything.

In a culture that treats rest as a reward, this practice offers something different: rest as a starting point.

If your body and mind have been asking for a pause, this is an invitation to respond to.
